The Centre for Vocational Education Research (CVER) is a research institution, funded by the UK government's Department for Education.
Funding
CVER currently has a PhD Scholarship for a new PhD student starting in September 2018. You will join the CVER research team at the University of Sheffield, led by Professor Steven McIntosh.
The successful applicant will have their full PhD tuition fees paid at the appropriate rate for 3 years starting from the 2018/19 academic session and will also receive an annual maintenance stipend at the standard UK Research Council rate (£14,777 for 2018/19).
Your PhD research will combine education economics and applied microeconometrics, making use of large scale administrative data from learners, education and training providers, and businesses. The research must have a focus on vocational education.

Entry requirements
- Applicants must have successfully completed, or be close to completing, an MSc degree in Economics, or a Masters degree with a high Economics content, from a UK university or have a comparable international qualification from a recognised institute of higher education.
- Applicants should have experience of data handling and microeconometric methods, preferably using STATA.
- Some familiarity with the academic literature and policy in the area of UK vocational education is strongly desirable, though not essential.

- Candidates should indicate on the application form under Funding Source details that they wish to be considered for the ‘CVER Scholarship'.
- Applications should include a CV including academic record (max. 2 pages); supporting statement (max. 2 pages); academic transcripts; two references; and a research proposal.
- The summary should include a discussion of the methodology used, the results and the implications of the findings.
- An English language proficiency certificate should be included by applicants whose first language is not English; the minimum requirement is IELTS 6.5 with no component less than 6.0, or equivalent.
- Note that there is no need to provide a research proposal with this application. The exact topic of your research within the area of vocational education will be discussed and agreed after you start.
