We supervise students in both theory and practice-led research.
Based in the School of Performing Arts, the Centre for Creativity, History and Identity in Performance,welcomes PhD applications across a wide range of subject areas within the Performing Arts. With supervisors in music, music technology, musical theatre, drama and dance, we offer researchers from both practice and theoretical backgrounds a stimulating and challenging experience.
Whilst we can accommodate doctoral study in a wide variety of subject areas, we have particular supervisory specialisms in new musical theatre studies, documentary and applied theatre practices, computer modelling and auralisation, human-computer interfaces for performance, European modern dance, dance science and contemporary music.

CCHIP has links with numerous regional, national and international academic and creative organisations which can help to develop and publicise your research. CCHIP encourages its doctoral students to contribute to research events both internal to the university and externally.
To enquire about a possible PhD project, please complete a PhD Initial Enquiry Form. Alternatively, you can submit a full Expression of Interest directly via our Making Your Application page. If accepted, you will receive a conditional offer with a request to submit a research proposal and attend an interview to expand on your proposal. Start dates are available on the first of each month.
Should your area of interest involve any aspect of learning and teaching in the arts, you may wish to locate your study within the Arts Learning and Teaching Research (ALTR) Group. Topic areas include: arts education, art as research in learning and teaching, pedagogy and andragogy, applied arts and health/community learning, drama and theatre education, music education and applied arts research. International Scholarship
We are pleased to announce a new scholarship to support international students.The Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship will be available to new overseas students starting on a full-time undergraduate or PhD course from September 2019.
