About the Programme

A PhD under supervision from Dr Quinn can focus on the exploration of any theoretical approach to International Relations via its application to empirical case studies. He is particularly interested in Realist (including classical, neoclassical and structural) approaches, but is willing to supervise work involving others.

Dr Quinn is happy to work with strong candidates in developing their research proposal, but they should approach him with a clear initial idea in mind for their area of focus and a draft outline of their proposal already in writing. Please see the link to the Department's Guidelines for PhD Applicants, provided below, for advice on how to present a good research proposal.

Funding Notes

Applicants with proposals of the highest quality and strong academic track records may be able to compete for nomination for internal funding competitions. These include Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) scholarships, School of Government & Society bursaries, and one-year University Scholarships. These are highly competitive, and in most cases only suitable for home students. There are also dedicated scholarships for students from Brazil and China, for which nomination may be possible if you make contact sufficiently early in the academic year.
