We have over 100 years of achievement in both education and research, and we offer PhD supervision across the legal field, supporting a range of approaches--from the doctrinal to the sociolegal, comparative, criminological and critical.
We are committed to making doctoral students part of the life of the School of Law and the wider University. In support of this, we have a bespoke training programme for new PhDs, and students can also can avail of training opportunities offered by the University's Graduate School, which is beside the School in a beautiful converted building. We have funds to support PhD students who want to present their work at conferences or expert seminars, and our PhD students can apply for paid teaching experience from their second year of studies. There are also opportunities to get involved in editorial work for the Northern Ireland Legal Quarterly, which is one of the UK's oldest law journals, and in podcasting via the School's LawPod. Our student-led Research Student Network is very active, hosting regular get-together and write sessions, coffee and catch-up sessions, as well as bespoke events designed to promote the work of QUB Law Doctoral Students..
We are based in a modern building at the heart of the university campus, and within walking distance of Belfast city centre. As a first year PhD you will share a large office with others beginning their doctoral studies; from second year, you will have your own PhD office, shared with several other PhD students.
PhD / MPhil degrees
Applications are invited for PhD / MPhil degrees which are awarded on the basis of original, independent research. Proposals are welcomed in any field of study within law, but are especially encouraged in the following areas of expertise at QUB Law:
- Human Rights
- Justice
- Law and Governance
We are also delighted to be able to welcome applications in the following emerging areas of legal studies:
- The UK's changing relationship with the European Union (EU)
- Business and Human Rights
- Heritage, Property and Culture
- Law and new technologies, from the human right to science, to copyright in a digital environment
Our academics use a particularly wide range of legal research methods, allowing us to offer supervision to PhDs that are doctrinal, sociolegal, critical, criminological or oral-history based. We are also able to host interdisciplinary PhDs, working with experts from across Queen's.

Our research programmes are available on a full-time and part-time basis: normally, 3 years full-time / 6 years part-time for a PhD; and 2 years full-time / 4 years part-time for an MPhil.
Funding opportunities
Each year the School participates in a range of funding competitions, helping applicants to secure prestigious awards, for example, our applicants secured awards from two UK Research Council schemes--AHRC Northern Bridge and ESRC NINE--and from Northern Ireland's Department for the Economy.

Applicants must submit a research proposal of 1,500 words max via QUB's application portal, along with other required documentation (eg, names of two referees, application form, degree certificates and transcripts). The proposal must address: (i) 'what' (what is the research question that will be addressed), (ii) 'why' (why should this question be addressed; how will it augment scholarship in the area), and (iii) 'how' (what methodology and method(s) will be adopted to address the question).
