About the Programme

Cardiff Business School is one of the leading business schools in the UK and has a global reputation for research, teaching and learning. Staff occupy key positions in world-wide academic networks and conduct research which influences a wide audience in Britain and abroad.

The School's mission is to produce research of international standing which covers all areas of management and business studies. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, the School was ranked 6th in the UK of all business and management schools; 70% of the School's research was judged to be either world-leading or internationally excellent. The School's vibrant research environment contributes to its growing PhD programme, which is ESRC recognised and currently has some 140 PhD students.

Research at Cardiff Business School
Research is organised around the School's main subject sections:

  • Accounting and Finance
  • Economics
  • Human Resource Management
  • Logistics and Operations Management
  • Marketing and Strategy

These provide a broad disciplinary home for individuals, and coordinate research, teaching and administration; however, supervision is available across a wide range of research topics and applicants are encouraged to visit the School website at www.cardiff.ac.uk/business-school for more detailed information on research groups and individual staff research interests.

PhD Programme
Cardiff Business School offers opportunities for full-time study leading to the degrees of PhD and MPhil. Our PhD programme is 4 years in length for full-time students.

The PhD programme will prepare you either for a career as a leading academic scholar or to excel in business practice or senior public policy decision making. Along the way you will be encouraged to publish, before completing an innovative thesis that contributes to academic debate in your chosen field.

Each student is appointed a supervisory team of at least two qualified supervisors, who will nurture your development as you work towards your doctorate. We draw on the expertise of over 140 faculty who publish widely, edit and review for international journals, act as external examiners within the UK and globally and provide consultancy services to major UK and global organisations.
