SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
Research in the School of Languages and Social Sciences ranges across the following areas: English Language and Applied Linguistics; Modern Languages and Translation Studies; Politics and International Relations; Sociology and Policy. At Aston we have brought together our researchers in multi-disciplinary research centres which lead research projects, supervise research students, host conferences, workshops, public lectures and seminar series, and regularly welcome distinguished visitors and international researchers. A key function of these centres is to sustain research excellence and to promote its dissemination both to academic communities and to the wider public.

Master/Doctor of Philosophy (MPhil/PhD)
Join LSS' postgraduate research programme and you will work towards your MPhil or PhD as part of our vibrant research community. Our researchers are well known experts in their fields and our research success has been recognised through a number of significant funding awards. LSS regularly hosts high profile seminars and conferences featuring world renowned thinkers and practitioners and as a postgraduate research student you will have the opportunity to attend and present at the annual student-led Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Conference (IPC).

Funding Opportunities
PhD Studentship in the School of Languages and Social Sciences
Each year in December the School of Languages and Social Sciences (LSS) invites applications for PhD studentships from strong candidates in any of the research areas covered by the School. The studentships are for full-time study over three years, commencing the following October.
LSS is a multi-disciplinary research-focused School which brings together researchers in the areas of Languages (French, German, Spanish), Translation Studies, Politics and International Relations, Sociology and Policy, and English. ESRC PhD Studentships - Midlands Graduate School
The Midlands Graduate School is an accredited Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP). One of 14 such partnerships in the UK, the Midlands Graduate School is a collaboration between the University of Warwick, Aston University, University of Birmingham, University of Leicester, Loughborough University and the University of Nottingham.
The School of Languages and Social Sciences at Aston University is able to offer ESRC Doctoral Studentships in Area Studies (European Studies) as part of the Midlands Graduate School.
Applications open in September with an application deadline in January.

The ESRC studentships cover fees and maintenance stipend (if eligible) and extensive support for research training, as well as research activity support grants.
