The School has a thriving postgraduate community with approximately 100 research postgraduates. We take the training of research students very seriously and endeavour to provide the facilities and supervisory guidance which will help each student to flourish intellectually and work productively.
The PhD Programme
The School offers opportunities for full-time and part-time study leading to the degrees of PhD for Critical and Cultural Theory, Creative and Critical Writing, English Literature, Language and Communication, and Philosophy. MPhil options are available for some programmes. There are 3 starting points: October, January and April.

ESRC funding
The Linguistics and Bilingualism Pathway of the Wales Graduate School for the Social Sciences (WGSSS) is delighted to offer fully funded WGSSS (ESRC DTP) PhD studentships on a full or part-time basis, starting in October 2024. Prospective students should have an excellent academic background, holding a 1st or upper 2.1 degree, or a master’s from a UK university. Students can be based at any of the constituent units of the pathway including the School of English, Communication and Philosophy at Cardiff University and are invited to propose a research topic for doctoral study in the language-related areas of expertise of staff. Broadly, these areas include research that addresses the structure, meaning and use of language. Successful applicants will receive a fully funded studentship (fees and stipend). The competition is open to Home and Overseas applicants. Please apply to the PhD Language and Communication with an October 2024 start date. AHRC funding (South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership 2)
Cardiff is part of a consortium of 10 universities that form the South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership. The application process for the next round of funding via SWW-DTP2 is now open with an application deadline of 23.59 on Monday 22 January 2024.
