About the Project

This scholarship is funded by Swansea University’s College of Science and EPSRC.

State date: October 2018

Project Supervisors:

- Professor Paul Meredith, Department of Physics
- Dr Matt Elwin, Centre for Nanohealth
- Professor Owen Guy, Department of Chemistry

A PhD studentship is available for UK candidates in advanced functional coatings for use in integrative semiconductor technologies. In particular, the project will involve the investigation of next generation coating techniques such as (but not limited to) Molecular Vapour Deposition to create insulators, semiconductors and metals as components in optoelectronics. The research will encompass processes and materials development, device and thin film fabrication, clean room processing, and a full range of analytical activities such as electron microscopy, optical characterisation and modelling, surface analysis etc. This multi-disciplinary project is part of the new Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials (CISM) with activities across the Colleges of Science and Engineering. It will be closely linked to several industrial partners with potential opportunities for the successful candidate to spend extended periods of research time at the partner sites.

Eligibility
Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, physics or materials science, and a relevant Master’s degree or equivalent research experience. A strong background in materials chemistry, thin films or surface analysis will be advantageous.

We would normally expect the academic and English Language requirements to be met by point of application. For details on the University’s English Language entry requirements, please visit – http://www.swansea.ac.uk/admissions/englishlanguagerequirements/

Due to funding restrictions, this scholarship is open to UK/EU candidates only.

Funding Notes

This scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus an annual stipend of £14,777 for three years.
