Dr J Busfield  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

The ideal candidate would have an interest in understanding the design and behaviour of materials used to manufacture high performance tyres operating in harsh environments. The applications include off-road motorsports, mining and truck. The industrial partner is a world leading manufacture of nanostructured reinforcing particles based in Atlanta, Georgia.

This project will investigate how tyre materials can be improved by coupling materials innovations with advanced materials characterisation and modelling. The project will examine how fracture mechanics and fatigue mechanisms contribute to premature failure of tyre tread materials. The project will exploit the benefits of next generation nanostructured reinforcement.

This project is based in the UK leading academic rubber research group and involves travel to the USA to work in the sponsor’s world leading R&D laboratories as well as with the tyre testing facilities at Polymer Research Lab. in the Czech Republic. This project would suit a graduate from an engineering, physics or materials science background. This project is supervised by Prof James Busfield at QMUL and Dr Radek Stocek at PRL.
