About the Project

Applications are invited from graduates in psychology or other relevant social science (First or Upper Second) to work with the NIHR Global Health Research Group on Developing Psycho-Social Interventions for Mental Health Care at Bart’s and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry. The 3 year studentship will commence in January 2019 and be based at the Unit for Social and Community Psychiatry (WHO Collaborating Centre for Mental Health Service Development) at the site of the Newham Centre for Mental Health.

The NIHR Global Health Research Group on Developing Psycho-Social Interventions for Mental Health Care at Bart’s and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry aims to developing and testing psycho-social interventions in partnership with institutions in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Colombia and Uganda. The Group (Director: Professor Stefan Priebe) is multi-disciplinary and focuses on the application of a resource-orientated approach to treating severe mental illness. This approach means utilising the resources people have available within their families, friends and communities to overcome mental health problems and mental distress. The group is focusing on three particular principles of resource-orientation, namely DIALOG+, peer/volunteer support and family involvement.

The PhD studentship is flexible but will focus on resource-orientated approaches to treating severe mental illness within low and middle-income countries (LMICs). This may include evaluating the process of conducting global mental health research across the different partnerships of the NIHR group, focusing on the adjustment and evaluation of resource-oriented models for different contexts in LMICs and/or developing new small-scale proof of concept studies to test the principles of resource-orientation as applied within a particular LMIC.

Interviews to be held on Monday 3rd December 2018
