About the Project

A 3.5 year PhD studentship in synthetic and materials chemistry is available under the supervision of Dr Rachel Platel in the Department of Chemistry, Lancaster University, starting in October 2018. The project, fully funded by a large multi-national building materials manufacturing company, will be based at Lancaster University, but will include regular work visits to the sponsor’s UK R&D and manufacturing site.

The project will explore new preparation methods for novel thermosetting resins, primarily based on renewable raw materials, for use in the development of cutting edge closed cell insulation materials. The project will involve resin and foam synthesis and characterisation.

During the course of the project, you will be trained in synthetic chemistry techniques and a range of characterisation techniques including NMR and IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, gel-permeation chromatography. The project will involve additional sophisticated analytical and physical testing of intermediates and rigid foam materials, with the potential for access to pilot and manufacturing trial facilities.

Applicants should hold, or expect to receive, a 1st class or good 2:1 UK Masters-level degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry or a closely related subject, with an interest in synthetic and/or polymer/materials chemistry and should possess synthetic chemistry skills commensurate with this level. Enthusiasm to work in a laboratory environment, a keenness to learn (by tuition and independently), a collaborative attitude and possession of excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.

Funding Notes

The studentship will cover fees at the UK/EU rate plus the standard maintenance stipend (£14,553 for 2017/18).
