About the Project
FPC@DCU – Ireland’s first Fraunhofer Project Centre, develops microfluidic systems which are forecast to leverage decisive technological breakthroughs in personalised medicine and the life sciences. Typical applications of these next-generation “Lab-on-a-Chip” devices are biomedical point-of-care and global diagnostics, tools for life-science research and biopharma as well as monitoring the environment, infrastructure, industrial processes and agrifood.
Based on its leading know-how in high-performance centrifugal microfluidic technologies, FPC@DCU aims to drive larger-scale integration towards sample-to-answer automation of complex, bioanalytical multi-parameter tests at the point-of-use. In its a strong partnership with the globally renowned Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT) in Germany, FPC@DCU seeks marry technical reliability with economic manufacture - typically by advanced injection moulding techniques.
The PhD project will support FPC@DCU’s Virtual Prototyping strategy by simulation of geometrical tolerances arising from manufacturing processes such injection moulding, and their impact on microfluidic functionality.
