About the Project

An exciting opportunity to study for a PhD in Health Economics in the UK and the Netherlands!

Applications are invited for a 3-year fully-funded PhD Studentship starting December 2018 – January 2019. The successful applicant will study both at the University of Birmingham and Maastricht University, and will be registered for a joint PhD.

This PhD research aims to develop appropriate approaches for identifying, measuring and valuing intersectoral costs and benefits, through a case study of sexual health services in the UK and the Netherlands.

This research will aim to:
1. Critically appraise the costs and benefits adopted in current economic evaluations concerned with interventions in sexual health;
2. Identify intersectoral costs and benefits for sexual health interventions;
3. Develop and pilot methods for measuring and valuing intersectoral costs and benefits in sexual healthcare to inform decision-making.

The research will involve a range of qualitative and quantitative techniques, which will allow the student to develop valuable skills which are in demand in the UK, the Netherlands and internationally.

Person Specification
Applicants should have a strong background in health economics or health services research. They should have a commitment to health economics / health services research and hold or realistically expect to obtain at least an Upper Second Class Honours Degree in a relevant subject, or a Master’s degree in health sciences, health economics, public health or a related discipline with a substantial component of research training or relevant research experience.

Applicants must be European residents, achieve the required University of Birmingham IELTS score (average 6.5 overall and no less than 6.0 in any one category), and be willing to spend at least 1 year at each of the partner institutes.

Additional Requirements:
• You are enthusiastic and would like to work in an international context.
• You have a demonstrated interest and understanding of health technology assessment, health economics and economic evaluation.
• You are versatile and able to contribute to multidisciplinary research.
• You have excellent writing skills and have published your research or have work of a suitable quality for publication.
• You are able to work independently and to take the initiative, and are capable of managing deadlines as well as working together with others.
• You have good communication skills and can motivate others to work towards the common success of a project.

The successful candidate will be registered as a PhD student at Birmingham University and will also be registered at Maastricht University.

Funding Notes

This PhD is fully funded by the University of Birmingham and Maastricht University. Funding includes tuition fees at the home/ EU student rate and a full stipend (£18,000 in year 1, £19,200 in year 2 and £20,400 in year 3), both for 3 years.

The studentship is open to UK/ EU students.
