About the Project

The Safety-Critical Software Design project will be financially supported by a company. This PhD project aims to systematically study software safety assessment process, techniques/methods and fault-tolerant safety-critical software design. Based on the proposed approaches, the student shall develop safety-critical flight guidance and navigation software for future integrated flight management system.

Cranfield University is an exclusively postgraduate university that is a global leader for education and transformational research in technology and management, and one of Europe’s largest academic centres for aerospace research, development and design. The School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing (SATM) is one of the largest providers of engineering education, research and technology support to aerospace industry. The SATM has launched a £35M project cofounded with Airbus Rolls-Royce, to build a new Aerospace Integration Research Centre (AIRC). The Centre will provide dedicated space and specialist equipment to address future grand challenges which face the aerospace sector.

The SATM’s Centre for Aeronautics (CoA) aims to be internationally recognised as the first choice for research and education in Aerospace Design, Advanced Engineering Methods, and Avionics Systems Engineering. Aerospace Design covers a wide range of aerospace systems design and applications, including R&D of aircraft, airframe systems, and avionics systems. The CoA operates numerous flight simulators, advanced aircraft avionics integration rig, Ethernet-based AFDX avionics simulation and ATM laboratories.

Applicant must hold a Bachelor Degree of First Class or a Master Degree (2:1) in Aerospace/ Computer Software Engineering/Applied Mathematics, and have good programming skills in C/C++ in Linux/Unix environment. Experience in RNP navigation, software safety, trajectory optimisation, aerodynamics are an asset. The PhD candidate is required to start in Feb 2019.

Funding Notes

This studentship will provide a bursary of up to £22,000 p.a. for three years, which will cover both the tuition fee including Additional Fee Element (AFE) at the UK level for UK/EU candidate and the maintenance bursary. The current PhD tuition fee is £18,500 p.a. for overseas students.
