About the Project

Applications are invited for a 4-year PhD exploring the dynamics of quantum systems relevant to the development of quantum sensing technologies . The project would suit quantum theorists interested in close interactions with experimental collaborators and experimental developments worldwide.

New developments in single-spin sensing using NV colour centers in diamond open up the prospect of MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) on the nanoscale or even atomic scale. An exciting and recent development are coherence based sensing detection techniques that probe the quantum entanglement between the NV spin and surrounding nuclear spins in the environment. The project would include investigation and development of techniques to enhance the control nuclear spins as memory registers for the quantum state of the sensor as well as the development of efficient protocols for imaging and relating the underlying atomic scale data to the measured coherence .

The supervisors and prospective PhD students would be members of an active and diverse research group encompassing experimentalists and theorists working in areas of quantum optics, quantum optomechanics, quantum sensing ranging from practical applications to foundational work. UCL hosts a Centre for Doctoral Training in delivering quantum technologies which provides a large cohort of PhD students in related areas allowing ample opportunities for interaction and networking. About 40 academics at UCL work in quantum technology related areas, hosted by the UCL Institute for Quantum Science and Technology.
