MRes Scholarship: Enhancing spiritual care provision across NHS Wales? The ‘Standards for Spiritual Care Services in the NHS in Wales 2010’: their use to date and development for the future

Here is an exciting opportunity to conduct a mixed methods study, with the potential to inform spiritual care policy development in NHS Wales.

The selected candidate will apply their research and interpersonal skills and ambition to exploring how the ‘Standards for Spiritual Care Services in the NHS in Wales 2010’ have been used and if/in what ways they should be revised to meet the changing needs of the NHS and the patients/carers/staff it serves into 2020 and beyond. This research project will allow the student to develop transferable knowledge and skills in this exciting field of research.
This Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarship (KESS) project will be held in the Faculty Life Sciences and Education at the University of South Wales.

KESS is a programme funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) awarded by the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO) in the Welsh Government. The MbyRes will be associated with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and will benefit from expert supervision expertise provided by Staffordshire University. The project will focus on developing the spiritual assessment and documentation processes in Wales with the potential to enhance holistic care and wellbeing of patients across NHS in Wales.

The project is backed by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board which provides health services to people within its catchment area, spanning Caerphilly to Monmouth, however this research project has an all Wales focus.

Studentship:
The studentship will cover the fees for a full-time PhD programme and pay a stipend of circa £14k p.a. There is also around £9k project support costs available for consumables, travel, minor equipment, training (including the KESS Grad School) and conference attendance.

The position is available from 1st April 2019.

Eligibility of Student:
To be eligible to hold a KESS studentship, you must:
• have a home address in East Wales area (details below)* at the time of registration.
• have the right to take up paid work in the East Wales area* on completion of the scholarship.
• be classified by the University as ‘home’ or ‘EU’ for tuition fees purposes according to the University’s guidelines.
• satisfy University of South Wales’s admissions criteria: see below, qualifications and experience and application process

* East Wales area covers: Vale of Glamorgan / Cardiff / Newport / Monmouthshire / Powys / Wrexham / Flintshire

Qualifications and experience:
Eligible applicants will:

• Have a degree (2i or higher) in an appropriate discipline such as nursing, theology, religious studies or allied health
• Possess a reasonable understanding of health related research methods and an interest in the interface between spiritual care services, policy and health.
• Be highly self-motivated, with capacity to learn and develop applied research techniques
• Have well-developed and positively collaborative interpersonal skills
• Have an ability to deliver technical reports and communicate findings
• Be willing to travel and work in health care settings
