About the Project

Topic: Remote condition monitoring of large infrastructure using UAV-mounted laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV)

Laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) is now readily accepted as an alternative technology for the measurement of surface vibrations with special benefits for a wide range of applications. Inherent remote operation makes LDV of particular interest for example, for the dynamic characterisation and condition monitoring of large infrastructure. LDVs, however, make a measurement of relative vibration and, as such, any vibration of the instrument itself, especially if mounted on a vibrating platform or vehicle of some kind, therefore needs to be accounted for in order that a precise measurement is made.

This project will involve the research and development of LDV measurements from vibrating platforms including UAVs, underwater vehicles and even hand-helds. Applications of national interest include: (i) the determination of the vibration signature of friend or foe aircraft; (ii) determination of the condition or health of large plant (eg) in remote energy/chemical processing facilities; (iii) the inspection of large infrastructure such as road and rail bridges based on their vibration characteristics, and/or (iv) and the determination of blood flow profiles through the vibration of the skin from a hand-held device to assist in the monitoring of patients.
