Prof C Abell  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

A 4-year BBSRC CASE PhD studentship in partnership with Syngenta is available from October 2017 in the laboratory of Professor Chris Abell. The project aims to develop novel compounds that target the enzyme DXS, which catalyses the first step in the non-mevalonate isoprenoid biosynthesis pathway. This target has potential for the development of novel herbicides. The project goal is to use fragment-based design, which utilizes biophysical techniques, synthetic organic chemistry and structural biology to design novel inhibitors of this enzyme. The student will spend at least three months in Syngenta gaining experience of structural and molecular biology.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain) the equivalent of a UK first class or upper second-class honours degree (and preferably a Masters degree) in chemistry or other relevant discipline. We particularly welcome applications from students interested in working at the interface between biology and physical sciences.

Applications should include a CV, a summary of any previous research project(s) undertaken, detailed academic transcripts and the names of two academic referees, and should be emailed to Dr Katherine Abell ([Email Address Removed])

Please quote reference MA10506 on your application and in any correspondence about this vacancy.

Funding Notes

The studentship will provide a maintenance grant and tuition fees at the UK/EU rate, and is available to UK and EU students who meet the UK residency requirements of the UK Research Councils. Students from EU countries who do not meet the residency requirements may be eligible for a fees-only award. Owing to funding restrictions imposed by the sponsor, non-EU citizens cannot be considered.
