Prof Fiona Doohan  Applications accepted all year round  Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

About the Project

We have identified a novel wheat NAC transcription factor and want to determine if it can enhance plant disease resistance and also to determine its biological function. Based on initial studies we know that it enhances resistance to at least one stress factor and that it interacts with a novel orphan protein. We have produced stable transgenic lines (wheat and Arabidopsis) in collaboration with NIAB UK. Using this material we will determine the influence of the gene product on the host response to a range of diseases and abiotic stressors. Also we will use CHIPseq analysis to identify the downstream targets of this gene. We will also use a combination of cell biology and biochemical techniques to identify other members of the orphan gene-NAC complex. The student will work as part of a larger team working on disease resistance genes and the role of novel genes in disease resistance.

Applications will be reviewed on Sep 25th and, pending the outcome of that process, at regular intervals thereafter until a successful candidate is appointed.
