About the Project

Analysis of the swimming of slender microscopic organisms (such as a spermatozoon) has wide and important applications in biology (such as fertility and reproduction). You will join an international leading research group in swimming of microscopic organisms. You will model the flow problem using the Stokes flow theory. The main development will be to find a closed analytic solution to the problem using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. Two cases will be considered: an organism swimming in an unbounded fluid and near a rigid wall, respectively. The propulsive effectiveness will be studied in terms of swimming mode, liquid property (density and viscosity) as well as its proximity to the wall.

This research project is one of a number of projects at this institution. It is in competition for funding with one or more of these projects. Usually the project which receives the best applicant will be awarded the funding. The funding is only available to UK citizens or those who have been resident in the UK for a period of 3 years or more.
