About the Project

Aerodynamic noise from trains is increasingly important as train speeds increase. The noise is caused by air flow over different parts of the train. The bogie region, including the wheels and train suspension, is an area of complex geometry that is responsible for an important part of the noise.

The purpose of the project is to develop understanding of the mechanisms and key factors influencing the aerodynamic noise generated in the bogie region under complex conditions, including speeds in the range 250 to 400 km/h and temperatures in the range –50C to 20C. This will be based on Computational Fluid Dynamics modelling as well as experimental work in a wind tunnel. The project will concentrate on the leading vehicle which is the most critical for noise generation. In addition it is intended to study potential noise control technologies.

The project will be carried out in collaboration with South West Jiaotong University, Chengdu, China. One or more visits to Chengdu of up to two months are envisaged.

Previous experience of Computational Fluid Dynamics methods is essential.
