About the Project

For repair and replacement of dental tissue, “photoactive” biomaterials offer significant benefits since light curing provides a fully controllable setting mechanism of a single paste system, which requires no mixing by the surgeon. As such, photoactive biomaterials for orthopaedic application are of great interest and are currently being developed in our laboratory. Unfortunately, the resin chemistry used for such photoactive materials and the nature of the light-cured free-radical polymerization reaction may lead to an undesirable biological response in host tissues.

The aim of the current project is to investigate the effect of material components in model photoactive resin formulations on setting reactions and to improve the interaction at the biomaterial-tissue interface.

At present, we would only consider applications from prospective students with:
- a good (bio)medical degree, with interests in any of the areas outlined above,
- good command of the English language as outlined in the postgraduate prospectus,
- a source of funding to cover tuition fees and bench fees.
