Investigation into the role of autophagy in ovarian cancer

We are seeking highly motivated applicants who wish to conduct ovarian cancer research leading to the qualification of PhD, within the School of Medicine and Health at University College Cork (UCC), (http://www.ucc.ie).

This position is funded by the Brid Carr memorial fund in association with Breakthrough Cancer Research. The research will be conducted at the new Cork Cancer Research Centre (CCRC) facilities in the Western Gateway complex in UCC. CCRC is a multi-disciplinary research centre which designs and supports scientific programmes in cancer research (http://www.ccrc.ie). The Centre is a partnership between the Cork University Teaching Hospitals and University College Cork. CCRC has state-of-the-art facilities and benefits from interacting teams of scientists and clinicians with track records in cancer research.

The candidate would be joining the autophagy team at CCRC (http://www.ccrc.ie/autophagy) and will conduct research in the area of cell death and survival mechanisms in ovarian cancer cells. The research is aimed at understanding mechanisms of resistance to established therapeutic strategies and will explore novel potential therapeutic strategies and targets in ovarian cancer. The candidate will be trained in the necessary research methods and encouraged to pursue new avenues of research where appropriate. The candidate will be expected to publish their data in peer-reviewed publications and present at national or international conferences. This position is available immediately.

Applicants will ideally have a First Class Honour’s degree, or higher second class degree in a relevant area (e.g. Cell Biology, Biochemistry).
