Prof Ross Forgan  Applications accepted all year round

About the Project

Bright, highly motivated candidates are invited to apply for a fully funded 3.5 year PhD position in the School of Chemistry, available to commence on 1st October 2017 in the Forgan research group at the University of Glasgow. The PhD project is part of an ERC-funded study into the development of porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for application in biomedicine and self-assembly through precise control of functionality, surface chemistry and morphology. MOFs are hybrid materials comprised of organic linker molecules and metal ions or clusters, and the project may be developed to focus on either organic or inorganic chemistry, dependent on the candidate’s experience. One of the projects will involve a significant biosynthetic component.

The ideal candidate will hold (or expect to hold) a 1st or upper 2nd class MSc / MChem / BSc or equivalent, and have experience of inorganic synthesis, organic synthesis and solid-state analysis. The student can expect to become an expert in the design, synthesis and analysis of porous materials, through hands on experience of solid-state synthesis, crystallographic techniques, NMR spectroscopy and gas uptake measurement.

The research lies at the crossroads of supramolecular chemistry, inorganic chemistry and chemical biology, and the multidisciplinary nature of the work will require a student capable of administering international collaborations, with associated opportunities for travel. More information on the Forgan group can be found at:

Prospective candidates should contact Dr Forgan for information by email – [Email Address Removed] – with a CV and cover letter.

Funding Notes

Funding is available from the ERC to cover tuition fees for UK / EU applicants, as well as paying a stipend at the Research Council rate (estimated £14,510 for Session 2017-18). Full funding is only available to candidates from within the EU; self-funded students from outwith the EU are encouraged to contact Dr Forgan directly.
