About the Project

Objectives
•To characterize the genetic variability of Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) from different clinical isolates and identify the mechanisms the virus relies on to escape the restriction activity of host factors
•To identify novel antiviral targets based on post-translational modifications exploited by HCMV during replication

Expected achievements
•Characterization of the viral DNA genes undergoing variability during the first steps of infection and their interaction with host restriction factors
•Characterization of the host restriction factors and the post-translational modifications they undergo during HCMV replication in both in vitro and in vivo models
•Novel antiviral drugs targeting post-translational modifications occurring during HCMV infection and essential for virus replication

Planned Secondments
•Helmholtz-Zentrum For Infection Research, Braunschweig, Germany; Evaluation of results in infections with cytomegalovirus
•JENA Biosciences GmbH, Germany; CLICK-based methods for labeling of viruses and cells

Requirements
•Solid background/expertise in cell biology, virology, and immunology
•Experience with mouse disease models
•Ability to manage large experimental setups
