About the Project

This project, focusing on the link between migrant integration and citizenship, will be located in the Department of Politics and International Relations within the School of Social Science. The issue of migration and integration has become a hot topic in academic, political and media debates. Questions of integration speak to such varied and important issues as citizen participation, xenophobia and political populism. Importantly, issues of integration are related to the notion of citizenship and illuminate what it means to be a citizen. Pertinently, supposed failure to integrate fuels concerns in relation to international migration. This PhD will investigate migrant integration and will explore one or more of the following issues:
• Divergences in citizenship policies
• The role of civic tests
• The relationship between citizenship and shared values
• The link between citizenship/dual citizenship and identities
• The role of inclusion and exclusion in processes of citizenship
• Political participation of migrants
• Political representation of migrants
