About the Project

The project focusing on the Evolution of the Cuban Political Model will be housed in the Department of Politics and International Relations within the School of Social Science. Since 1959 Revolutionary Cuba has pursued a truly unique political model (both internally and with regards its foreign policy) which has permitted the island to have a considerable presence in global politics. For a small Caribbean island this is remarkable. The objective of this project is to examine its evolution with particular focus on both the theoretical underpinnings of Cuba’s distinctive political model and a comparative analysis of this political model under the leaderships of Fidel and Raúl Castro. This research will address a number of pertinent questions related to these topics with its significance being increased as the island enters a period of likely change in the near future resulting from Raúl Castro’s proposed retirement in 2018.
