About the Project
Durham University PhD Studentship in Partnership with the National Football Museum
Location: Durham University
Durham University and the National Football Museum are inviting applications for a three and a half year AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership PhD Studentship, available from 1st October 2016. The organisation Women in Football will also work as a project partner on the studentship.
The Project
The project will be supervised by Dr. Stacey Pope and Professor Linda McKie at Durham University and Dr. Kevin Moore at the National Football Museum. A large body of research has examined women’s experiences of playing football, whilst less attention has been paid to the experiences of women in non-playing roles, including the experiences of women working in leadership positions in football. This research project focuses upon women who have challenged the traditionally male domain of football by working in senior roles in men’s professional football in England.
The study will focus on the experiences of women working in senior roles in men’s professional football since the formation of the Premier League in 1992. Particular attention will be paid to any changes over the past 25 years, details of the experiences of women working in senior roles, as well as barriers and stereotypes encountered. The research will draw on an interdisciplinary approach, combining history and sociology. The successful candidate will undertake oral history interviews with women working in senior roles in men’s football. They will also spend time undertaking archival research at the National Football Museum, with the archives underexplored in the context of leadership roles. In addition, funding is secured for a period of six months working at the museum, in close partnership with Women in Football, gaining valuable insight and experience of both organisations as well as disseminating and promoting the findings of the research.
The successful candidate will be based in the School of Applied Social Sciences, which is home to a vibrant multi-disciplined postgraduate research community and several active research groups. For further details visit: https://www.dur.ac.uk/sass/pgresearch/
