THE PROJECT
Despite being one of the main driving sectors of economic development and growth, the manufacturing industry is one main contributor to environmental degradation as well as other environmental problems, such as climate change and natural resources scarcity. UK manufacturers are not only facing such environmental challenges, but also pressures from institutional players, such as governments, customers, investors and local communities. As a result, manufacturers have been forced to reduce the environmental impact of their products and services, owing to increasingly stringent environmental regulations and the ‘consumer environmental pull’.

This research, therefore, aims to enhance the green capacity of the UK manufacturing sector by means of identifying and adopting optimal GPs according to each company’s current practices, priorities, constraints and performance, through a novel application and functionality of an artificial intelligent-based tool.

What are the most common (best) practices currently adopted by UK manufacturers?
What is the role of [non-] green capacity building factors in the effective adoption of optimal GPs in the UK manufacturing sector?
How can artificial intelligent technology be applied?

ABOUT THE CENTRE/DEPARTMENT
The Centre for Business in Society is the Faculty of Business and Law’s hub for specialist research. The centre recognises that the behaviour of organisations and policy makers increasingly has significant positive and negative effects on the lives of individuals, groups, communities, organisations, nations and global relations. These effects can be beneficial and enable enhanced social, economic and environmental wellbeing. However, there can also be negative consequences linked to business practices and policy decisions that pay little or no attention to internal and external corporate responsibilities, including their impact on the sustainability of economic, social and environmental relations conducive to well-being. Our research in organised into a number of discreet themes including policies, industries and economic growth.
