About the Project

The objective of this project is to develop a mathematical and computational model to test hypotheses on the formation of experimentally-observed, poorly-understood, mesoscopic-scale features that appear during the welding of aerospace materials. These features can detrimentally effect the weld quality and integrity.

The computational model will be solved using the finite element method and implemented using the open-source C++ library deal.II. The model will account for mesoscopic-scale phenomena including grain boundary sliding and segregation, phase transitions, and thermal effects.

The School of Engineering of the University of Glasgow is seeking a highly-motivated graduate to undertake this exciting 3.5-year PhD project within the division of Infrastructure and Environment. A solid foundation in nonlinear solid mechanics and the finite element method would be advantageous. The candidate is expected to have some programming experience.

It should be noted that this application is to gain admission to our PGR programme with the decision on this being based on your academic achievements, and an offer of admission may be sent out before a decision on this Scholarship is made. Candidates applying for this Scholarship will have their applications further vetted as to acceptability to this Scholarship and will most likely have an interview/discussion with the supervisor before any decision is made.

For an informal discussion or for further information on this project, potential applicants are encouraged to contact Dr Andrew McBride using the below form.
