CorCenCC (Corpws Cenedlaethol Cymraeg Cyfoes – The National Corpus of Contemporary Welsh): A Community Driven Approach to Linguistic Corpus Construction

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship as part of an inter-disciplinary and multi-institutional project that is creating a large-scale, open-source corpus of contemporary Welsh language (CorCenCC). The project aims to redefine the scope, design and infrastructure of corpus development methodology, and to create a major Welsh language resource for use in community, commercial, educational and governmental settings.

The successful applicant will be working in the project team alongside applied linguists, Welsh language specialists, and computer scientists. The post holder’s work will focus on the creation of a pedagogical toolkit which will be integrated into the corpus infrastructure, enabling teachers and learners to use corpus data to support language learning.

This student will be part of the CorCenCC team (http://www.swansea.ac.uk/riah/research-projects/corcencc/), contributing to developments on the project. The specific topic to be researched by the successful candidate will be negotiated once they are in post.

Eligibility

Applicants must have a first or upper second class undergraduate degree, and a merit or above at Master’s level in a relevant subejct area, such as Applied Linguistics, Computer Science, Corpus Linguistics, Language and Communication, Language Acquisition/Pedagogy, Linguistics and/or Welsh.

The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills in both English and Welsh and will be able to produce high quality work to deadlines.

Relevant expertise in language learning and teaching is essential, and an understanding of the role of corpus and concordancing software in the language learning context is desirable. Knowledge of basic computer programming will be advantageous.
