About the Project

Active Materials for Intelligent Antenna Technology

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic group whose primary focus is working on antennas, microwave and millimetre wave engineering for LTE and fifth generation (5G) wireless communications. The aim is to explore a variety of novel RF and microwave active antennas based on a combination of semiconducting materials and technologies embedded in antenna radiating structures. The objectives are to model, design and test RF and microwave transistors integrated with antennas and integrated receiver circuits.

The study will involve design, measurements and modelling (linear and non-linear) of RF or microwave transistors, such as FETs, HEMTs, as well as microwave matching circuits and integrated ASICs. Experience with microwave circuit and electromagnetic simulation tools such as EMPIRE, CST, Ansys Electromagnetics Suite, etc. would be desirable as well as any previous experience in antennas or microwave circuit design and testing.

You will be expected to support the activities of the Electromagnetic Systems Engineering Group at Cranfield, including contributing to the supervision of MSc Research Students, attending and presenting at International Conferences on wireless communications, and writing research papers on the outcomes of your research.

The student will be based at the Cranfield University, Shrivenham Campus, in Oxfordshire but will also be expected to spend short periods of time at the Bedford Campus.

Entry requirements:

Students with a 2.1 or first class degree in electronic engineering, physics, mathematics or similar numerate discipline will be considered for a studentship. Basic skills and knowledge in wireless communications is essential.

About the sponsor:

Cranfield University is a post-graduate only University and one of the top research intensive universities in the UK. The Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF) has assessed that 81% of the research at Cranfield University is world leading or internationally excellent. In Cranfield’s Unit of Assessment (Aeronautical, Mechanical, Chemical and Manufacturing Engineering), the number of world leading or internationally excellent outputs has more than doubled from 2008 and we have ranked second only to Imperial College London, in terms of research power.

How to apply:

In the first instance a CV and the names and addresses of two referees should be sent to Dr. I. L. Morrow (Email: [Email Address Removed]). Informal enquiries may also be directed to Dr. Morrow.

Funding Notes

The scholarship is an industrial iCASE award that covers full UK/EU (EU applicants who have been resident in the UK for 3 years prior to application) PhD tuition fees and a tax-free stipend at the current RCUK rate (£15000 in 2016/17). EU nationals resident in the EU may also apply and will qualify only for PhD tuition fees only.
