About the Project

Plymouth University has an internationally recognised standing in coastal/shelf sea marine science. The primary purposes for this project is contribute to research, development and assessment of the next generation regional (coastal/shelf sea) ocean model and the variational data assimilation system embedded in it. Modern ocean models are an integral part of the Global and Regional Ocean Observing Systems which combine observations, modelling and analysis of marine variables to support operational ocean services worldwide.

The research will focus on the ability of variational data assimilation techniques to improve the quality of regional shelf sea models. Emphasis will be on assimilating temperature and salinity profiles along with sea surface height which has proven scientifically challenging in the shelf environment.

The PhD will work within the Plymouth Ocean Forecasting Centre in the School of Marine Science and Engineering, the study will be linked to the on-going research projects and be built on the success of our participation in EU MyOcean (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MyOcean) and PERSEUS (http://www.perseus-net.eu) multidisciplinary research. The student will participate in the regular PhD training programme offered by the School of Marine Science and Engineering and the Postgraduate School, Plymouth University.

Applicants should have a minimum of a first class or upper second class bachelor degree in marine / ocean / environmental science,physics, mathematics, or a similar subject. Applications from candidates with a relevant masters qualification will be welcomed. Knowledge of FORTRAN or MATLAB/PYTHON programming languages will be an advantage.

The studentship will have a three year duration and will cover full-time home/EU tuition fees plus a stipend of £14,296 per annum. The position is open to all applicants, although candidates required to pay overseas fees must be able to cover the difference between home/EU and overseas tuition fees (approximately £11,040 per annum).
