About the Project

Cataract surgery is one of most widely preformed operations in the world, with an expected growth in the number of operations performed over the next 25 years. Hyaluronic acid based ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVDs) are viscous solutions used during the operation in order to create space for the surgeon to work but also to protect the corneal endothelium during the course of the operation. While OVDs are invaluable surgical aids, complications can arise if they are not completely removed upon completion of the operation.

In this project, we will prepare new materials to aid in visualization during the operations under specific conditions. The project will develop skills in chemical synthesis, polymer characterization, microscopy, and rheology and will address a key need that could provide critical new materials for cataract surgery. The project is in collaboration with Hyaltech Ltd., a biomedical company with more than 25 years of experience (https://www.zeiss.com/meditec-ag/about-us/locations/uk-livingston.html). The successful applicant will be primarily based at Glasgow, but will have frequent interaction with Hyaltech Ltd, and will spend 3 months working in the company.

Funding Notes

Funding is available to cover tuition fees for UK/EU applicants, as well as paying a stipend at the Research Council rate (estimated £14,553 for Session 2017-18) for four years.
