About the Project

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic nurse, committed to patient focused and evidence based care. You will work as a Staff Nurse in the University Hospital Southampton Foundation Trust whilst undertaking a PhD in with the University of Southampton

This exciting opportunity will enable you to combine clinical practice with a research role. You will work with your nominated clinical mentor and academic supervisors to develop your clinical academic role in both practice and university settings. You will join a thriving and expanding group of Clinical Doctoral Research Fellows using the purpose built Clinical Academic Facilities.

The overall aim of the project is to evaluate the cognitive training of patients by nurses in UK critical and high care areas. The project will:

- Determine the feasibility of the delivery of the cognitive training for nurses, patients at risk for delirium development and patients with a positive delirium assessment;
- Explore if cognitive training improves cognitive functioning in the short term and long term in patients at risk for delirium development and patients with a positive delirium assessment
- The findings from the study will be used to develop a follow-up study into the effectiveness of cognitive training in critical and high care areas.

Funding Notes

This full time post is for 4 years 6 months and will begin in September 2017. You receive a 0.4 WTE band 5 salary and a stipend of £6,500 at Band 5 in year 1. This stipend will increase year on year (year 4 £6,898). Your part-time PhD fees are paid on your behalf.
