About the Project

3 year PhD programme.
We are looking for a PhD candidate who interested in undertaking a PhD programme in the Birmingham Business School (UK) to investigate human capital development, training and education, talent management and labour market dynamics in EU manufacturing sector. This PhD project will study trends and strategies that will allow the formation of skills and competences to match manufacturing firms’ requests to create jobs opportunities, ensure standard of living and reduce income inequality. Mixed method approach will be used.
This doctoral project is part of a bigger research agenda that links scholars across the EU, US and Singapore. PhD students will have the unique opportunity to be part of international network of young researchers and high profile scholars with competences and expertise on such theme. During the PhD programme, the PhD student will be encouraged to deliver academic publications, and will be exposed to academic conferences, policy debates and public engagement with relevant stakeholders such as think tanks and associations.
Interested candidates must have a background in industrial economics, business studies, economic geography, environmental economics and innovation.
A PhD degree from the Birmingham Businesses School can be a stepping stone to pursue a carrier in academia; consultancy in research agencies or think tanks; and policy roles in national and international organisations. The PhD student will join the Global Value Chain Research Cluster in the Birmingham Business School. The GVC Research Cluster includes a vibrant research community of academic staff, post-docs and PhD students which is diverse and multidisciplinary with expertise that ranges across labour relations, engineering, operations and supply chain management, international business, industrial economics and political economy. ALTERNATIVELY. Self-funded candidates or candidates with sponsor may wish to apply. PhD students will have the unique opportunity of a fully funded visiting period overseas of up to 12 months in Europe or the US. We would prefer start September 2016. Funding is also available for attending conference and workshops.
There are a number of currently open competitive studentship schemes at the University of Birmingham, and students are welcome to discuss their eligibility for these with the supervisor or the PG Admissions Tutor.
