About the Project

Cocoa is one of the most valuable cash crops, grown mainly by smallholder farmers in developing countries. Demand is growing steadily and future prospects are good. Verticillium wilt (VW) is the major disease problem which threatens cocoa production in Uganda and in DR Congo, areas with huge potential for expansion of cocoa growing.

The aim of this work is to develop effective methods for managing the disease, based on a sound scientific understanding of the distribution of the pathogen in the region, the susceptibility of different cocoa varieties and the importance of alternative hosts harbouring the disease. The student will be expected to spend several weeks in each year in Uganda and/or DR Congo, where they will be housed and supported by Esco, a successful and dynamic company with a well-developed network of field staff and close contact with cocoa farmers.

Training will be given in isolation and identification of an important plant pathogen, in molecular-based methods for identification, and in methods used to assess the susceptibility of plants to pathogens. In addition, training in experimental design and statistical analyses will be given, along with personal development courses available at the University of Aberdeen. VW is perhaps the least-well known disease of cocoa and this PhD offers a unique opportunity to study an intriguing and rewarding scientific problem closely related to the welfare of farm families and sustainable development of the region. The successful candidate will be part of a global network of scientists studying cocoa diseases, with future opportunities to continue doing research.

Application Process:

Please apply for admission to the ’Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Science’ to ensure that your application is passed to the correct college for processing.

Please provide a copy of the degree certificate and transcript for each previous degree undertaken, a copy of your English language proficiency certificate (if relevant), and contact details of two referees who can comment on your previous academic performance (at least one should be from your current degree programme). References may be requested if you are selected for interview. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
