About the Project
A PhD position at Carnegie Mellon University is available starting from Jan. 2017, funded by NSF project “CRISP: Financial and physical infrastructure: a computational approach for integrated network resilience analysis under extreme events,” jointly advised by Profs. Matteo Pozzi of the Civil and Environmental Engineering dept. (https://faculty.ce.cmu.edu/pozzi/) and Bruno Sinopoli of the Electrical and Computer Engineering dept. (https://users.ece.cmu.edu/~brunos/).
The project investigates the effects of extreme events on society, relating the immediate damage induced on the physical infrastructure and the post-event recovery process that a community is able to implement, making use of financial resources. The PhD student will develop models and methods for reliability analysis of systems subjected to extreme events, Markov chain models for system evolution and recovery following major disruption, and network models of transportation and supply infrastructure systems interconnected with financial infrastructure systems, using graph theory and probabilistic graphical models.
Applicants for the PhD position should hold (or be expecting to obtain) a 1st class degree (MEng, Msc or 5-year degree) in Engineering or a relevant discipline (as Physics, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics), have excellent analytical and programming skills, and very good written and verbal communication skills.
The studentship provides a gross monthly stipend of approximately $2,300 and full payment of tuition fees. Details of the requirements for the application process are available at CMU CEE dept. University website http://www.cmu.edu/cee/prospective/graduate-degree/application-process/index.html. Formal applications for the position can be made online through the same university website: http://www.cmu.edu/cee/prospective/graduate-degree/, citing “CRISP-PhD position” in the statement of purpose.
Informal enquiries about the position and the application process should be addressed to the advisors using address [Email Address Removed], citing “CRISP-PhD position” in the subject.
Application before Sept. 15, 2016, is encouraged, but later application will also be accepted.
