About the Project

A fully-funded three-year (3-years) PhD student position at the Group on Interactive Coding of Images (GICI) (www.gici.uab.cat) at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain) (www.uab.cat) on the topic of data compression / source data coding.

The PhD position is related to an on-going research project that investigates novel techniques for the coding of remote sensing data, including lossy compression, near-lossless compression and lossless compression paradigms. In particular, the successful candidates are expected to contribute original work to improve the coding performance and the coding efficiency for current sensors (AVIRIS, Landsat 8, IASI, Hyperion, Sentinel 1/2,..) and for forthcoming sensors (AVIRIS-NG, Landsat 9, IASI-NG, Sentinel 3, ..), and for both on-board and on-the-ground scenarios. Both theoretical and practical results are anticipated.

Tentative start date and duration: February 2017, for 3 years.

Eligibility Criteria:

- Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, a Bachelor Degree of at least 300 ECTS or a University Master Degree or equivalent (Spanish Law 14/2011, June 1, 2011).
- Applicants should be highly motivated and should have a strong background in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, or a related discipline.
- Good computational skills and experience in a major programming language such as C++ or Java are required.
