Dr James Bell  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

About the Project

The scholarship is available for a PhD student to develop a new exciting programme of research on the New Zealand sponge fauna using a small ROV, and to specifically explore the ecology of sponges below the depths normally accessible by SCUBA. The research will focus on the diverse sponge assemblages in the Taranaki region including the Paraninihi Marine Reserve, with results relevant to sponge assemblages across New Zealand. The PhD will explore the functional roles of sponges in deeper water environments using a small Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), and compare assemblage function to shallow water sponges. This is likely to focus on feeding ecology and nutrient cycling in sponges, and spatial competition.

Funding Notes

This project is funded by the George Mason Scholarship in Marine Science from the George Mason Trust, which has specifically funded a PhD scholarship (for three years) and consumable/travel costs for research on sponges. This is a fully funded scholarship. Experience of SCUBA is required for this position

Applications for this position need to be through the Victoria University Scholarship office, follow the link below
