About the Project

University of Oxford, Department of Oncology and The CRUK/MRC Oxford Institute for Radiation Oncology.

A DPhil Fellowship position is available, tenable at Oxford University, on the project entitled:
1. Targeting BRCA1/2-deficient cells through synthetic lethal interactions with DNA damage response and cell cycle regulators. Supervisor: Prof. Madalena Tarsounas

You will be registered for PhD training while employed by the University on a Marie Curie Innovative Training Network, and will be expected to work within the laboratory of Genome Stability and Tumourigenesis led by Prof. Madalena Tarsounas. The research project is focused on understanding how tumour cells lacking BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene function differ from normal cells in their responses to exogenous damage induced by ionizing radiation, as well as to cell-intrinsic challenges that arise during DNA replication. Experimental work will investigate specific targeting of cells and tumours lacking BRCA1 or BRCA2 with chemotherapeutic drugs and/or ionizing radiation and is therefore deeply relevant to the search for treatments that would selectively kill tumour cells whose capacity for homologous recombination-mediated repair has been compromised (i.e. lacking BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes).

You must possess a BSc or MSc in a relevant field, along with the ability to design robust well-controlled experiments, to perform them comprehensively and to interpret the data objectively. You should have experience of appropriate laboratory techniques and a good knowledge of cancer biology literature.

Please note that under the terms of the EC funding, which aims to promote mobility within the research community, to be eligible for the post you must not have been resident in the UK for more than 12 months in the past three years. Persons who have obtained a doctorate or had more than 4 years full time research experience are ineligible.

These are full-time posts and are available for three years.
All applicants must complete an application form and supporting statement.
The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 14 November 2016.
