About the Project

A PhD studentship is available, which will be jointly supervised between Prof. Omar Matar in Chemical Engineering and Prof. Richard Craster in Mathematics at Imperial College London, to join an exciting research programme to study a problem of great industrial importance: the dynamics of multiphase flows.

The aim of this project is to contribute to the development of a general multiphase modelling approach as part of a programme (funded by an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Councils Programme Grant, MEMPHIS http://memphis-multiphase.org/) to elucidate the complex dynamics of multiphase flows and to develop validated numerical tools for accurate predictions. The methods being developed employ cutting-edge numerical methods and massive-parallelisation. In the project, there will be an opportunity to use the codes for the modelling and simulation of industrially-relevant problems and case studies with multi-national companies in the oil-and-gas (e.g. BP, PETRONAS, Shell) and personal-care product (e.g. Procter & Gamble) industries.

There will also be opportunities to work collaboratively with the MEMPHIS industrial partners (e.g. BP and P&G) and with the MEMPHIS partner universities (Birmingham, Nottingham, and UCL) who are carrying out multiphase flow experiments ranging from microfluidics to flows in large-diameter (several inches) long pipes (in excess of 10 meters) to provide validation data for the numerical codes.

In order to apply, applicants must have an excellent first degree in engineering, or applied mathematics, or related discipline; knowledge of fluid mechanics and numerical methods is desirable.

This studentship is available to start as soon as possible and applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.

Funding Notes

The 42-month studentship will provide full support for University tuition fees (home/EU), all associated research costs and an annual tax-free stipend of £16,296 p.a. All applicants must be fluent in spoken and written English.
