Project Detail:

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship funded by Loughborough University to start April 2017. The project will be based in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a major public health concern worldwide. It is crucial to consider lifestyle interventions that have the potential to reduce the burden associated with CVD. There is a lack of research exploring the synergies between physical activity and diet on cardiometabolic health outcomes. This PhD will primarily focus on conducting well-controlled human studies to examine the effects of a combination of exercise training and dietary supplementation or energy balance dynamics on biomarkers of cardiometabolic health in previously inactive adults.

Research at Loughborough University is highly collaborative and multidisciplinary, and the School of Sport Exercise and Health Sciences will provide an excellent environment in which to develop your research career. Research will be carried out in a world-class research facility, the National Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM), where our aim is to translate novel and timely lifestyle interventions into improvements of the health and wellbeing of the nation. The successful candidate will have access to state-of-the-art laboratories and will receive training in non-invasive techniques which examine cardiovascular function including ultrasound assessment of endothelial-dependent flow-mediated vasodilation of the brachial artery.

Entry requirements:
Candidates will normally need to hold, or expect to gain, at least a 2:1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in disciplines related to: physiology, nutrition, biomedical science or exercise science. A relevant Master’s degree in the aforementioned areas will be an advantage along with hands-on experience with human clinical research.
