Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
About the Project
Application Deadline: 20th Sept 2017
Interviewing: Week commencing 25th Sept
Start Date: October 2017
Eligibility: UK, EU national
Duration of award: 3 years
A fully-funded 3-year PhD studentship is available for immediate start. This exciting project will involve a class of small molecules that are able to change colour and texture/shape under different illumination conditions, thereby changing the appearance of any surface they coat. This project is designed to support exciting, pioneering research with the aim of opening up new avenues for progress in responsive materials, offering a visionary and ambitious vista across a wide spectrum of science and technology. It involves interweaving behaviours in materials ranging between structural chemistry and optical technology. The project focus is the design and synthesis of organic molecules and characterising their stimuli-induced optical, physical and fatigue properties. It will also be necessary to synthesise polymers and/or blend this materials with commercially available polymers to assess their colour and shape changing behaviour.
As a part of working in this industrially sponsored project, the student will work in close collaboration with Malvern Optical Ltd. He/she will need to present their research findings regularly to the project team.
Entry requirements:
Applicants are required to a have a first degree with minimum 2.1 in Chemistry or a recognised equivalent. Skills in small organic molecules synthesis, photo-responsive molecules in particular, will be an advantage. The candidate should be self-motivated, have good communication skills for regular interaction with other stakeholders.
How to apply:
Interested applicants are encouraged to send their applications with a covering letter and CV, including the names of two academic referees via email to [Email Address Removed]. Informal enquiries for further information about the project can be made to Dr M. Moniruzzaman [Tel. +44(0)1793 785391].
