About the Project
In the Laboratory for Enzyme Engineering and Evolution, we are interested in questions at the intersection of biochemistry and evolutionary biology. What were the structures, functions and mechanisms of enzymes in the ‘primordial soup’? What mutations are required to change an enzyme with one function into another? And how can we use insights from evolution to design proteins with biomedical and biotechnological applications?
Dr. Wayne Patrick is currently seeking 1-2 enthusiastic and hard-working PhD students to join his group.
In this project, you will seek to understand how enzymes with novel structures, functions and catalytic mechanisms can evolve. You will address these fundamental questions by using enzymes from the metabolic pathways of amino acid biosynthesis as model systems. You will employ a variety of techniques, including directed evolution, site-directed mutagenesis, kinetics, biophysics, and structural biology.
A background in (and fascination with) protein biochemistry is essential, while experience in molecular evolution, microbiology and/or biomolecular chemistry would also be beneficial.

The successful candidate will be supported through the University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship scheme. This provides a NZ$25,000 tax-free stipend per annum, plus all tuition fees, for 3 years (regardless of the nationality of the candidate).
Applicants must have a strong BSc (Hons) or MSc degree in a relevant discipline, as well as a willingness to learn, develop and apply new techniques. The start date is negotiable; students who are completing their degree this semester/term are welcome to apply.
