About the Project

Microbial biofilms are notorious to manage chemotherapeutically. With the increased level of awareness that these complex microbial communities play socioeconomically, then there is an urgent need to develop robust and appropriate biofilm test platforms capable of testing new biofilm-active antimicrobials.

Prof Ramage’s group has already established a range of mono- and poly-microbial biofilms to test biofilm-active molecules (http://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/dental/staff/gordonramage/). The aim of this industrially sponsored PhD studentship is to move these assays into a commercial setting. Focusing on biofilms of medical, industrial and environmental relevance, this studentship will develop and commercialise these assays into a high throughput quality controlled product. The successful applicant will work between the academic and industrial partner and will develop practical microbiology and molecular skills, as well as skills relevant to the industrial workplace.

The studentship will be based in the University of Glasgow Dental School within the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing at the University of Glasgow and will be co-supervised by Prof Gordon Ramage, Dr Karl Burgess and Dr Chris Woodall from BluTest Laboratories (industrial sponsor).

Project start date: Feb 2017
