About the Project

A central policy question for economies facing an aging demographic is how to make the most of the experiences and capabilities of older workers in the economy.

With the removal of compulsory retirement provisions for older workers, UK companies have a unique opportunity to realise the productive potential of older workers. However, a crucial aspect that is not understood is how retirement benefits interact with the incentives to continue working.

This research seeks to shed light on this issue by examining econometrically a high profile section of the labour market where incentives to work and retire come under intense scrutiny – namely the executive labour market.

This project aims to provide key contributions to the national debate on ageing and working and empower policymakers with an evidence base on the implications of ageing and the appropriateness of retirement incentives.
