About the Project

Position
Applications are invited for an MRC iCASE 4-year fully-funded PhD studentship to start in October 2017 in the research group of Dr Sean Bew (School of Chemistry http://www.uea.ac.uk/che) and Glythera (http://www.glythera.com). Candidates will have a strong chemistry background, a 1st or 2:1 Masters in Chemistry and enthusiasm for medicinal & organic chemistry. You will be conscientious, have an enquiring mind, excellent experimental skills, a solid knowledge of organic chemistry, an appetite & aptitude for interdisciplinary research, excellent communication & teamwork skills.

Project
ADCs are a new wave of anticancer drugs covalently linked to antibodies directed to antigens that are overexpressed in tumor cells. This collaboration will design, synthesise and evaluate new linkers (see Glythera website) for joining monoclonal antibodies to novel highly cytotoxic warheads and undertake the synthesis of a natural product cytotoxic agent. The resulting ADCs will be subsequently evaluated by you for their potential as highly effective biotherapeutics in the treatment of cancer at Glythera.

Application
This project will train the successful candidate who has a strong desire to acquire in-depth knowledge of cutting-edge skill sets in organic chemistry, natural products, cancer biology and antibody drug conjugates. The interdisciplinary nature of this research provides a unique training environment in an academic and industrial environment.

Informal enquiries are welcome ([Email Address Removed]). Apply now!

Apply online ensuring you outline your interest, commitment, suitability, qualifications and research experience in your application.

Funding Notes

This 4 year PhD studentship is an MRC Industrial CASE Studentship in partnership with Glythera Ltd. An annual stipend of £14,553 is available to the successful candidate who meets the UK Research Council eligibility criteria. These requirements are detailed in the RCUK eligibility guide which can be found at http://www.rcuk.ac.uk/documents/publications/traininggrantguidance-pdf/. In most cases UK and EU nationals who have been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the course are eligible for a full-award. Other EU nationals may qualify for a fees only award
