About the Project

This studentship unites historical, cultural, political and socio-economic approaches to the understanding of Borders and Borderlands. It recognises that identities and longstanding affiliations are not neatly confined within geographical or administrative boundaries, and explores the interrelations between what are perceived as ‘nested’ identities and those that are more fluid and thereby generative of more hybrid, cross-border identities.

In focussing on the Anglo-Scottish border – a boundary of particular contemporary importance - the studentship will examine the changes in the shared culture, memory and sense of community and belonging across the Anglo-Scottish border, and the complex inter-relationship between national identity and more localised ideas related to territory and place. In terms of the latter, the studentship will also be concerned with the potential reshaping of the nature, representation and status of Borderlands, which serves to challenge, hitherto, dominant narratives rooted in marginality and peripherality.
