About the Project

PhD Scholarship: Kiwifruit bioactives
Title: To extract and characterize kiwifruit bioactives, fibre, prebiotic activity and mucin production.

The project: The two species of kiwifruit most widely grown in New Zealand,Actinidia deliciosa(green kiwifruit) andActinidia chinensis(gold kiwifruit), are known as having high nutrient densities and as a good source of other bioactive components including polyphenols. Kiwifruit has a high density of vitamin C, vitamin E, potassium and magnesium salts, and is also an excellent source of dietary fibre. We are looking for a student to extract and characterize kiwifruit bioactives, fibre, and investigate the prebiotic activity and mucin production.

Location: Massey University’s Manawatu campus, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Duration: Three years, ideally commencing early 2017

Remuneration: The successful candidate will receive a tax‐free living allowance of $25,000 (NZD) per year for 3 years. In addition to the tax-free scholarship, the successful student will have their PhD fees and the research expenses for the project paid. This project is funded by Alpha Massey Natural Nutraceutical Research Centre.

Selection criteria: The ideal candidate will have:
• A Bachelor’s (pharmacy, digestive physiology, human metabolism, biochemistry, medicine, health sciences or related fields) and a Master’s degree, or a bachelor with honours equivalent to four years of study and attainment at first class or 2:1 level, from a recognized tertiary institution and in a relevant subject area.
• Some experience in undertaking research in the above mentioned areas (including literature searches, laboratory work, analyzing data, and writing publication for peer reviewed journals) is preferred.
• Have good written and verbal communication skills
• Strong academic record
• Ability to conduct research within an interdisciplinary team environment
• Be highly motivated.

In addition to the tax-free scholarship, the successful student will have their PhD fees and the research expenses for the project paid.
